A Guide for Emcees, From one of the GMs
Before an emcee ever sets foot on stage, understand one thing: Eliturite, one of the GMs of RVA Rap Elite, is watching. We chopped it up with him to break down exactly what it takes to stand out at one of Richmond's most celebrated Hip Hop showcases.

This Sunday, May 31, Episode 66 of RVA Rap Elite goes down at Vagabond, and the emcees locked in for the cypher include some heavy hitters. BDM, Sneeze, and Tone Redd, alongside Maryland emcee Salaam Nasty and more, will be in the building, while Ro$$etti and Islam Rap God returns after a brief hiatus.
What makes this episode even more exciting is that it will serve as the final event of Charged Up Fest weekend.
Last episode, we caught up with Eliturite, a 2x Rap Elite GM Champion and owner of HearRVA, a music blog focused on Richmond artists, to ask what he looks for in a standout emcee.
1. Get Seen Before You're Heard
Eliturite doesn't draft off produced tracks alone. 'Anybody can punch in bars,' he said flatly. 'That means nothing to me.' What he wants to see is breath control, stage presence, and relevant bars, even before they walk through the door. Your first impression happens long before the cypher. Record that verse and upload it.
2. Project Like the Room Depends on It
If the crowd can't hear you, your hardest bars land like silence.
“You gotta project. If people don’t know what you’re saying, the bars aren’t gonna hit. It doesn’t matter how hard they are.”.
Projection is non-negotiable. Eliturite puts it high on his list for a reason: the cypher is a live, energetic setting, and technical skill means nothing if it doesn't reach everyone.

3. Bring Your Personality, Not Just Your Pen
'If everybody's talking the same gunbar sh*t, you're not going to stand out,' Eliturite said. Personality is what separates a memorable performance from a forgettable one. The audience needs to feel like they're hearing your story, not just hearing someone rap.
4. Show Lyrical Creativity
Wordplay matters. Ideas matter. But what Eliturite really wants to see is an emcee rapping about themselves — their world, their perspective and what sets them apart. 'It's easy to rap about rapping,' he said. 'I want to see somebody rapping about them (selves).' Authenticity is the sharp edge.
5. Show Up. Always.
This lesson goes beyond the cypher into the battle rap circuit. As Intro the Nomad said after Episode 65's Bloody Knuckles battle: 'The most important thing was making sure that I showed up and completed my side of the agreement.' At RVA Rap Elite, showing up, prepared, committed, and present, is the foundation of everything.
