Head-Roc to Perform Impromptu Social Justice Set at Abi’s Books & Brews

by Tranae Cearnal

Chocolate City’s own, and Richmond ally, Head-Roc will perform for social justice tonight, January 15, at Abi’s Books & Brews.

We reached out to Head-Roc to ask how he first came in contact with Abi’s, its owner Keith Duffin, and how this “impromptu” performance for change came to fruition.

“I’ve been going to Abi’s, I believe, about six months now. I discovered it when looking for a place to get my early a.m. coffee at a place other than Starbucks. Love me some Starbucks coffee, but I don’t like where they put their money, the money I give them. So, finding Abi’s was a gem because they’re open at 5 a.m., have a great dark roast coffee, and put their money where their mouth is.”

The complete story behind Head'-Roc’s NEGROPHOBIA lives in this anniversary feature.

Head-Roc says his first time at Abi’s was met with overhearing Duffin discussing the political climate with customers. He says the obvious tone was one of disapproval of the current administration’s attitude and actions. “Somehow, I injected myself into the conversation.”

Duffin is already making noise in the city for using his space to spark conversations on immigration, socioeconomic inequities, and other hot topics. He recently hosted A Cup Towards Repair, an initiative offering a free cup of coffee to people of African American descent.

During a recent visit, Head-Roc mentioned the idea of performing at the shop, and both felt the timing was right.

“The rest is history.”

Join Head-Roc tonight at Abi’s Books & Brews, located at 1212½ W. Cary Street, where you’ll have the opportunity to hear him perform joints like Black Avenger, America!, and A.H.I.A.H (Affordable Housing Is a Human Right).

Show starts at 7 p.m.
