Track 003 Drops from Pigs Can’t Fly — Troy’s Soundtrack of Empowerment
Troy doesn’t mince words. In a snippet from our recent interview, when asked about the meaning behind his collaborative album with FanRan, Pigs Can’t Fly Vol. 1, he answers without hesitation:
“The simple message is fuck the police.”
Everyone in the room bursts into laughter, not because it’s funny, but because it’s raw, direct, and undeniable.
But that moment is just the surface. Underneath is a story of awakening. A story that began with a book, and led to his 2020 debut album Highway to Hell.
“Esco got me into reading. The first book I ever read was The New Jim Crow Law, which, it kind of told me a lot of shit I knew, but I didn’t know in detail. Like how certain presidents was really putting laws in place to give niggas football numbers, and the type of tactics they was using. That’s when I learned it’s so important to really know your history. ’Cause niggas was really targeting us, and niggas don’t understand that. The same problems we in today? It’s because of the shit they did in the past.”
That first book opened his mind. From there, he picked up a few more, and started to see not just the weight of the system, but the power of his community. The more he read, the prouder he became to be Black.
That pride fuels Pigs Can’t Fly. It’s more than music — it’s resistance, poverty, and survival. And while the album might sound like protest, Troy makes it clear: “this is not revolutionary music.” It is the sound of someone who refused to let his surroundings define him without first understanding how those surroundings have been constructed.
