Reimagining BELLY: Jay Bordeaux Channels ’90s Cinema Through Brush and Canvas
Written by Anaïs Stewart
BELLY - The Artistic Experience by Richmond artist, Jay Bordeaux, is taking place this Sunday, August 10th, at the Seasons Restaurant & Bar.
Jay Bordeaux will be showcasing his art inspired by Hype Williams’ film, BELLY. His art includes beautiful paint strokes of blue and white against beautiful Black skin. This well known movie in the Black community shows viewers the fight between being involved in street life and trying to leave it behind, all the while being aesthetically pleasing. The energy, visuals and influence from this movie will be felt throughout this whole event.
“With this show, I’m not just recreating scenes–I’m reinterpreting the emotion behind them.”
It is encouraged that the event goers “dress the part” of this late 90s film. Including: shiny suits, bandanas, gold accessories and popular brands at the time like FUBU, Tommy Hilfiger, and Sean John.
“BELLY" was more than just a movie– it was a mood, a cultural timestamp that captured the raw intensity of the late 90’s. Hype Williams turned street life into visual poetry, and that imagery stayed with me. With this show, I’m not just recreating scenes–I’m reinterpreting the emotion behind them. Using abstract styles, layered textures, and immersive color. I want to pull viewers into the energy, tension and beauty that defined that era. This is my artistic conversation with a film that helped shape a generation.” - Jay Bordeaux
